  • This morning, the two entities renewed the annual agreement under which Bankia donates €35,000 to fund the Foundation's activities, including the organisation of the King James I Awards

This Friday, Bankia joined, in the capacity of collaborator, the Board of Trustees of the King James I Awards Foundation (Fundación de los Premios Rey Jaime I), the body that governs and represents the institution whose honorary president is the King of Spain.

Bankia, whose registered office has always been in Valencia, will be represented on the Foundation's Board of Trustees by the deputy manager of communication and external relations, Amalia Blanco.

Ms. Blanco will thus join the governance body of the Foundation chaired by Ximo Puig, president of the regional government of Valencia, of which the regional councillor of finance and the economy, Vicent Soler, the regional councillor of education, research, science and sport, Vicent Marzà, the regional councillor of public health and third-level education, Carmen Montón, and the mayor of Valencia, Joan Ribó, are also members.

Other prominent companies and institutions from Valencia are also represented on the Foundation's Board of Trustees, including Mercadona, the Valencia employers association (AVE) and the regional chamber of commerce.

Bankia and the Foundation took advantage of today's meeting to renew the collaboration agreement between the two entities for another year. The signing ceremony, which took place in the regional government's Palau building, was attended by Professor Santiago Grisolía, founder of the awards, the corporate director of Bankia's operations in Valencia and Castellón, Jaime Casas, as well as Amalia Blanco.

The agreement is endowed with €35,000, funds that are earmarked to the organisation of the awards and pursuit of the Foundation's other activities, which include scientific and medical research.

At the Assembly, the trustees also agreed to call the thirtieth edition of the King James I Awards, which will be adjudicated on 4 and 5 June. The prize ceremony will take place in the autumn and will be presided by the royal family.

The King James I Awards

The King James I Awards, or the Premios Rey Jaime I in Spanish, are awarded to individuals who stand out in their respective fields of expertise and have spent much of their professional lives in Spain. The candidates must be nominated by three people and must certify their credentials. At present there are prizes in six categories: basic research, economics, medical research/clinical research, environmental protection, new technology and entrepreneurship. Each is endowed with prize money of €100,000 and a gold medal. They are the most prestigious prizes in their field in Spain and among the most generous in the country. The prize winners must commit to earmarking a portion of their prize money to research and entrepreneurship in Spain.
